Online Tutoring Courses from September 2007
gvuAre you interested in developing your online tutoring skills? If you are, then you might want to apply for the E-teaching 1 and 2 courses from the UNU-GVU. Both courses will commence from 4 September 2007.

E-teaching 1 is designed as an introductory course to prepare educators, lecturers and subject professionals to develop, manage, implement, support and moderate online learning and enable them to become active members of an online community for online tutors.

You will gain practical experience of logging into and using a virtual classroom, building online learning environments, supporting and guiding online students in their learning processes, and describing, discussing and selecting pedagogical approaches.

E-teaching 2 will enable you to be become a designer, developer and manager of independent online courses or of a study programme. Participants should be able to transform theories and methods into practice as well as to evaluate and identify characteristics of existing learning resources.

Environmental Impact Assessment

eia On 2 April 2007, UNU launched a new open educational resource on environmental impact assessment. This resource is based on the UNEP EIA Training Resource Manual (2nd Edition) and was developed in collaboration with Professors Ralph Horne and Ian Thomas of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University, Australia.

Currently, it is envisaged that the educational resource will be utilized in a masters propramme on Global Environment and Development Studies organized by Agder University College (Norway) as a contribution to the UNU-Global Virtual University. In addition, the University of the South Pacific (Fiji) has also expressed an interest in adopting these materials for use in a Diploma on Environmental Studies.

This new educational resource can be freely used with the materials on Strategic Environmental Assessment. If you are interested in using these open educational resources in your teaching programmes or for self study, we would be really happy to here from you.  

 
New Course Module on Forestry

foper On 5 March 2007, UNU Online Learning launched a new interactive course module on Forestry, Forest  Policy and Economics. The course was developed in collaboration with the University of Joensuu as a contribution to the Forest Policy and Economics Education and Research (FOPER) project.

This project is funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Finland) and is coordinated by the European Forest Institute. The aim of the project is to develop a masters programme and a professional training course for a network of universities in the Western Balkans.

 
Strategic Environmental Assessment
sea A new open educational resource on strategic environmental assessment is now available. This resource was developed collaboratively by Oxford Brookes University and the UNU. It was officially launched in 22 February 2007 and will be used in the Masters Degree programme on Development Management developed at the UNU-Global Virtual University later this year. The open educational resource includes a course module, encyclopedia and instructional guide and can be used freely by universities and learners around the world.

The course materials were authored by Prof. Riki Therivel at Oxford Brookes University. Professor Therivel is an internationally recognized SEA expert and has written numerous books on topic. The course module, which was built in Wordpress, also includes video interviews with a number of subject matter experts including John Glasson (Oxford Brookes University, Maria Rosario Partidario (Technical University of Lisbon) and Chris Wood (University of Manchester).  

Learners interested in obtaining a certificate based on the course materials can apply to Oxford Brookes University. Others universities are planning to launch programmes based on this SEA open educational resource including the University of the South Pacific based in Fiji.
 
Internship in the UNU Media Studio
studioAre you interested in joining the UNU Media Studio? We are looking for an intern to work on the UNU OpenCourseware project for the next six months. This would involve collaborating with all of the research and training centres in the UNU network to a create an initial set of ten courses in the opencourseware format. We are looking for someone who has an understanding of how the web works, with good English writing and communication skills. If you are interested in this internship please apply using the internship application form and indicate in your covering letter that you would like to join the UNU Media Studio and to work on the OpenCourseWare project.

UNU Rector calls for a Global Learning Space
In November 2005 at the World Summit on the Information Society held in Tunis, UNU Rector Hans van Ginkel repeated his call for a Global Learning Space to support science based education. In order to facilitate the creation of this space, the Rector stated that we need an Information Society that is open for all.

In this context, he argued that the UNU would explore meaures to promote the increased use of open educational resources, opensource software and open networks to promote collaboration in the higher education sector designed to help universities in the developing world tackle issues related to sustainanble human development.
